I was born and raised in Mumbai, a city that bustles with stories in every street and on every face. Twenty-three years ago, I moved to Hong Kong, and a camera became my first and constant companion. What began as a hobby soon became a way of seeing the world around me through a new lens. I was drawn to portraits, to how light revealed emotion and connection. That fascination eventually led me to the streets, where I discovered my purpose: building real, human connections that went beyond my lens.
Those encounters inspired me to pursue a Master’s in Journalism at The University of Hong Kong, where I learned to weave empathy into narrative. My love for still images naturally evolved into a love for moving ones, and from stories in stills, I shifted to tales on film.
Today, I am a documentary filmmaker and portrait photographer dedicated to exploring how people create meaning, faith, and livelihood in the margins of daily life. My work moves between the poetic and the political, always guided by the belief that media and imagery can be powerful tools for social impact.

To me, every lesson has a story to tell and I wish to be the medium through which these stories find light. My practice is built on the belief that media and photography are not just art forms, but tools for social impact. Each frame, each conversation, becomes a way to question, connect, and create change. Through my films and photographs, I explore the intersection of faith, labour, and survival, revealing the quiet strength that lives within ordinary lives.
I believe that storytelling can move beyond empathy into action. My mission is to create images and narratives that transform awareness into responsibility. I want my work to urge my audience to not only see, but to feel, to care, and to act.
Sonali Devnani's journey of self-discovery began with her camera. Through the lens, she saw not only the world but parts of herself too! It turned into a mission to make a change using the power of the camera. Focusing through the lens and immersing in cultures with so much to learn, eventually wanting to make a change and giving back to the society have been crucial elements of her career. The process of making images only just didn't make her a storyteller but in turn, narrated stories with the real meaning of life. What One sees through the lens is captured forever, it remembers little things long after everything is forgotten “ is our final speaker’s motto behind taking up photography.

Sonali Devnanvi is a photographer and filmmaker whose work comes from lived experience, not observation.
Her subjects are never treated as stories to be captured, but as lives to be understood. Every topic she chooses is deeply thought through, and that intention reflects clearly in her films.
